Decolonizing the Mind

Decolonizing the Mind

When you hear the word “decolonization,” do you think only of ancient history? Of empires, ships, and flags that no longer exist?

In reality, it remains an urgent issue today.

Formal colonialism may have ended, but the ways of thinking it left behind are still alive and well: in what we study, in what we call “knowledge,” and in what we consider “progress.”

Decolonization is not just about freeing a territory from another country’s control.

It is about dismantling the ways of thinking, producing knowledge, and organizing life that were imposed by colonial systems.

Territories have gained independence. Ideas continue to determine what is taught, what is considered science, and what is funded as innovation.

For centuries, the countries of the North imposed their languages, religions, political systems, and ways of knowing as if they were the only valid ones.

The Questions Almost No One Asks

Decolonization today means questioning that legacy:

  • Why do universities teach almost exclusively European philosophy?
  • Why aren’t Indigenous technologies recognized as innovation?
  • Why is the knowledge of the Global South viewed as folklore rather than science?

These questions seem simple, but they point to who decides what knowledge is valuable and what is left out.

"It is time to learn to free ourselves from the Eurocentric mirror in which our image is always, inevitably, distorted. It is time, in short, to stop being what we are not."

Aníbal Quijano

Decolonization means making room for other ways of thinking, creating, healing, and telling stories.

It means giving a voice and value to the peoples who were silenced—not as a symbolic gesture, but by recognizing that their knowledge also helps solve today’s problems: how to care for one’s health, how to farm, how to organize communities, and how each people tells its own story.

SURGLOBAL on The UX Rebels (Ep. 03, Season 6)

In this episode of The UX Rebels, we speak with Cristian Situ and Elsie Ralston, co-founders of Sur Global, a nonprofit organization that promotes more conscious and responsible innovation in Latin America. We discuss the origins of Sur Global, its purpose, and the educational model they’re using to train new generations of designers with a critical and locally grounded approach. We also reflect on the future of design in the region, the importance of rethinking the methods we were taught—methods that have historically been central to the world of innovation and technology—and the importance of adapting them to the contexts in which we are designing. We discussed the conference they’re organizing for October—a space where they aim to build community, learn collectively, and design from the Global South. A powerful, necessary, and urgent episode for those of us who believe that design has a social role to play in the world. And remember: we are rebels.
